Texas leads Supreme Court case against Obama’s immigration actions
WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court heard oral arguments Monday in an immigration case that could affect as many as 4 million people in the country illegally. The case centers on two executive actions by President Barack Obama that shield certain people in the country from deportation and allow them to work legally in the United States. Texas is leading the case against the immigration actions and is backed by 26 other states, challenging a 2014 policy put on hold by lower courts, known as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans. It furthered a 2012 policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The protection would apply to parents whose children are U.S. citizens, and expand the 2012 policy to include those brought to the country illegally as children. More than 700,000 people have taken advantage of those protections since 2012, although it could affect as many as 4 million people. There are more than 11 million people in the country illegally.
