Kentucky to pay nearly $700K to settle lawsuit with newspapersLEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The state will pay Kentucky's two largest newspapers $250,000 to settle a lawsuit filed over the release of documents for cases about children who die or are injured from neglect or abuse. News of the settlement was first reported by WKYT-TV's news partner, the Herald-Leader, and the Courier-Journal. Monday's settlement puts to rest a nearly seven year battle over records held by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, which investigates cases in which children might have died as a result of abuse or neglect. Under the settlement agreement, the state will pay legal costs of $110,000 to the Lexington Herald-Leader and $339,000 to the Courier-Journal. Each paper will also receive $125,000 in fines for violating the state open records act by refusing to release the records.
