LANSING — The Senate Appropriations Committee approved another supplemental funding bill of $148.8 million, including $42 million in federal dollars, for Flint in the wake of the public health crisis caused by lead contamination of the city's drinking water. If approved by the full Senate and the state House, it would bring the total funding for the crisis to $216.1 million. The money will be used for a variety of services including nutrition and child care assistance and development, replacement and improvement to infrastructure and lead pipes, and to pay for an expansion of Medicaid benefits to more women and children in Flint. The money is the fourth supplemental appropriation that Gov. Rick Snyder has proposed and the Legislature has passed since the scope of the problem became widely apparent in October. The water in Flint became contaminated with lead when the city, under the authority of a state-appointed emergency manager, switched its source from water provided by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department and drawn from Lake Huron to the water from the Flint River treated at the Flint water plant.
