Shoplifter who backed into security officer in attempt to flee ordered to spend 10 years in prison
A 49-year-old Lawton woman was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty in Comanche County District Court on Wednesday to charges related to a January shoplifting incident in which a security guard was hit by a vehicle at Central Mall.
Sherry S. Pierre was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 10 years suspended for assault and battery and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine. She also was ordered to serve two years for leaving scene of an accident with injury and one year for larceny of merchandise. All of the sentences are to run concurrently with credit for time served.
Pierre's pleas were in connection with a Jan. 13 shoplifting incident at Central Mall, 200 SW C Avenue. A mall security employee said he went to the driver's side of the suspect's vehicle to make contact with her. After seeing two more security employees coming, the employee then went behind the vehicle. That's when police said Pierre shifted into reverse and hit the man. He was able to move out of the way and ended up jumping onto the hood of the fleeing vehicle. The suspect then drove away at a high rate of speed with the man on the hood. She hit another vehicle in the back of the mall's parking lot and the security employee at that time was thrown off. The security employee was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of injuries including a separated shoulder.
The suspect continued to try to get away and hit a cement pole before disabling her vehicle. She and a child accompanying her took off running but were chased down by two security employees. Pierre was detained by citizens at the intersection of Railroad and D Avenue until police arrived. The child was released from the scene to a family member.
