LITTLE ROCK — State agencies that are part of Arkansas’ executive branch of government had nearly 800 fewer positions at the end of March than when Gov. Asa Hutchinson took office in January 2015, a decrease of about 3 percent, Hutchinson said Monday. “We are working hard to find efficiencies and to make our government more accountable to the taxpayer,” Hutchinson said in a news release. “So far, we are on the right track. But we are far from done, and I expect our state agencies to continue finding increased efficiencies and lowering the cost of operating state government.” According to the release, 25,733 people were employed in the executive branch at the end of March, which was 795 fewer than were employed in January 2015. Salary savings resulting from the decrease were estimated to total $7 million by the end of the fiscal year on June 30. The decline in total employment was attributed in the release to the governor’s statewide job freeze and a focus on efficiency in state operations.
