Louisiana universities would be able to raise tuition, fees more easily under legislationThe Louisiana Legislature is looking favorably so far on proposals to allow the state's public colleges and universities to raise tuition and fees more easily and without state lawmakers' permission. The Louisiana Senate voted 30-7 Wednesday (April 20) to approve a constitutional amendment to allow the state's college and universities boards to set their own tuition and fees. Currently, the Legislature has to sign off on any tuition hikes. Even if it passed the Legislature, Senate Bill 80 would require a popular vote to be enacted. Transferring control over higher education tuition and fees from the Legislature to the school boards requires rewriting part of the state constitution. So the change requires both a vote of the Legislature and Louisiana residents. On the other side of the statehouse, the House Education Committee also pushed forward two other proposals to allow public colleges and universities to raise tuition and fees on their own -- albeit with some restrictions.
