Medical marijuana expansion passes Louisiana Senate on 2nd tryA bill to expand medical marijuana availability in Louisiana and set a Sept. 1 deadline for public universities to decide whether they'll grow the drug passed the Senate on Wednesday (April 20). It was the second time this week that Senate Bill 271's author, Sen. Fred Mills, tried to get the measure through the upper chamber. The bill fell one vote short of passage Tuesday because some Senators were not in the chamber when the vote occurred. But Mills picked up two key votes -- Sens. J.P. Morrell and Troy Brown, both of New Orleans -- that pushed him past the 20-vote threshold. "We are a state that believes in what we do is state rights; well why are we waiting for the FDA?" Mills asked before the vote. "Why are we waiting on someone to help us when we have the ingenuity to do it ourselves."
