BATON ROUGE — Democrat Gov. John Bel Edwards said expanding Medicaid has been the most significant accomplishment of his first 100 days of office, but that was done with the stroke of his pen. On other priorities, like increasing the minimum wage, passing an equal pay bill and raising more taxes to mitigate deep budget cuts, the governor will need cooperation from a sometimes reluctant Republican Legislature, especially in the House. "I'm committed to raising the minimum wage (from the federal rate of $7.25 an hour to an initial $8-an-hour rate); it's modest, but meaningful," Edwards said during a press conference here Tuesday. "And equal pay is critically important." An equal pay bill has cleared the Senate but will face a tougher time in the House, and multiple minimum wage bills will be heard later in the session.
