Local early education bill looks for traction in the SenateJEFFERSON CITY — What began as a bill to allow Greene County, or any city in the county, to adopt a new 1/4 cent sales tax with voter approval to support early childhood education has grown into legislation that includes eight different measures to address local concerns around Missouri, and it could still be growing. Whether that helps or hinders the bill's ultimate chances of becoming law remains to be seen. On Wednesday, half a dozen civic leaders from Springfield traveled to the Capitol to testify in favor of the bill during a Senate panel hearing. "One in four children in our community is not ready to learn by the time they attend kindergarten," said Todd Parnell, who serves on the Every Child Promise Executive Committee, which is focused on promoting early childhood education and combating childhood poverty.
