University of Missouri secures funding boost, limited cut to administration in budget dealJEFFERSON CITY — Power and patience protected the University of Missouri during budget negotiations between the House and Senate, and lawmakers said both are likely to be in short supply next year. In a budget conference committee on higher education, the Columbia campus was spared and a cut to UM System administration was scaled back to $3.8 million. The university as a whole would receive $17.1 million from a pool of $37.2 million for increased aid for public colleges and universities. The $13.3 million net increase to this year’s appropriation of $434 million is a best-case scenario in a year when lawmakers toyed with the idea of no appropriation at all and the Senate’s top leader called for the UM budget to get “a haircut.” “When you have people who care a lot about the university on the conference committee, that usually yields results,” said House Budget Committee Vice Chairman Scott Fitzpatrick, R-Shell Knob, referring to Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, and state Rep.
