The Iowa House approved a bill Thursday that would extend a mental health tax levy, but it doesn’t address the underlying problems some say threaten the state’s mental health service delivery regions. “We have to pass the levy so that we can work on the long-term solution,” said Rep. Linda Miller, R-Bettendorf. The levy is set to expire in July. Extending it ensures counties can continue to fund mental health services, which is critical, Miller said. But many county supervisors say it’s time to lift a cap on the amount each county can levy. Several counties have hit their cap and have to rely on others with higher property values in their region to contribute more and subsidize their costs.
