House speaker punts boot-fitting event amid wrangling over deficitKansas House Speaker Ray Merrick invited legislators and lobbyists to get measured for a pair of custom-made boots at the Capitol next week amid deliberations on Gov. Sam Brownback’s plan to resolve a state government budget deficit. House and Senate members are to reconvene the 2016 legislative session Wednesday in Topeka, and Merrick’s chief of staff had informed Statehouse insiders by email that representatives of a Texas company would be stationed April 28-29 in the Statehouse visitor’s center to address footwear needs of invited clientele. “You can be measured for your own custom-made pair of Lucchese boots in Topeka next week!!” Merrick chief of staff Christie Kriegshauser said in the invitation. “As an additional option, the Kansas state seal can be added to your hand-made boots.” She said Lucchese was a “legendary boot maker and iconic brand of the American West.” The company’s dedication to time-honored craftsmanship techniques would leave purchasers of boots walking in “unrivaled quality, fit, comfort and style,” she said.
