People have called Rebekah Caldwell Mason the "defacto governor" of Alabama. But that's not all of it.
She was also the defacto First Lady.

As the Montgomery Advertiser reported today – darn them for their good work – Mason as recently as February went with Bentley to Washington, as his date to the formal White House dinner held as part of the National Governors Association meetings.
Oh, they didn't call it a date. She was just his "guest" at the elegant White House dinner, his "plus one." Like all the other governor's spouses.
