New York’s wildlife rehabilitators, who nurse injured hawks and rescue abandoned fawns, are up in arms over tight new license conditions from Albany. The license conditions issued by the state Department of Environmental Conservation forbid rehabilitators from giving anything more than the most basic assistance to adult deer, and limit their interaction with fawns. Adult deer in the custody of rehabilitators on May 1 must be released into the wild or euthanized. DEC officials say the rules are common-sense updates, partly done in reaction to concerns that a few rehabilitators had kept rescued deer indefinitely.
