ALBANY – The state Department of Taxation and Finance said it saved taxpayers $400 million by stopping fraudulent tax refund claims during the income-tax season that ended Monday. The halted claims, totaling over 239,000, increased 18 percent from the previous tax season, the governor’s office said Thursday. “We have zero tolerance for those who seek to cheat the system at the expense of hard-working New Yorkers,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. “By using first-rate technology, this administration is cracking down on would-be scammers and stopping this fraud right in its tracks.” A program that tracks the amount of money saved from rejecting fraudulent tax refunds says that state taxpayers saved nearly $4 billion since its inception in 2003.
