HARTFORD — The House of Representatives this week unanimously approved providing lost wage compensation to firefighters diagnosed with certain types of cancer after reaching a compromise that removes the financial burden from municipalities. The cost instead would be covered with some of the funds derived from a fee on phone services for enhancements to the 911 program. The bill now goes to the Senate, which last year approved a similar bill that would have required towns to pay workers compensation to firefighters. Republicans sided with municipal leaders last year and continued their complaints this year, saying the legislation would become too costly. House Minority Leader Themis Klarides, R-Derby, said Thursday that the work for a compromise shows that Republicans also wanted to support firefighters, but only if they could avoid raising costs for municipalities.
