Six Greenville County cities will soon share $1 million annually as part of an agreement spurred by the reorganization of the county’s recreation department nearly three years ago. The dissolution of the Greenville County Recreation District, which operated as an independent special-purpose district that covered the county outside the city limits of Greenville, Greer, Mauldin and Simpsonville, incorporated the district’s facilities and programs into the purview of county government. Those cities as well as Travelers Rest and Fountain Inn will benefit from the distribution. That action on a one-vote resolution in June of 2013 effectively created additional property taxes for residents of those four cities. And that still bothers Greer City Councilman Wryley Bettis, the lone member of the Greer City Council to vote against accepting the agreement that will give Greer a share of $111,937.53.
