El Paso city officials late Wednesday night imposed a $2.16 million fine against the owner of a dilapidated, historic Downtown building for failing to fix a long list of city building and fire code violations and other problems. It's the largest fine ever imposed by the city for building code violations, said City Attorney Laura Gordon. The city Building and Standards Commission unanimously approved the fine and city officials' recommendation that a long list of repairs and other problems be completed within 30 days or the city will have the building's remaining two retail tenants removed and the building boarded up and secured. If the building isn't fixed, the city has the option to do the work to bring the building into code compliance and put a lien on the building to pay for the work, city officials said.
