Chatham County jury awards longshoreman $4.5 million against Georgia Ports Authority A Chatham County State Court jury on Wednesday returned a $4.5 million verdict for a longshoreman injured while working on a container vessel at the Georgia Ports Authority in Garden City. Jurors before Judge Gregory V. Sapp found the ports authority 100 percent responsible for injuries suffered by Bruce Lawyer, then 48, of Tillman, S.C. on Sept. 28, 2012. The verdict found the ports authority’s negligence caused the injuries and damages to Lawyer and that Lawyer’s conduct was not a cause of the incident. According to the suit filed by Savannah attorney Brent Savage, Lawyer was working as a longshoreman, as a lasher, aboard the MV Ibrahim Dede at Container Berth #3 and was injured when a Georgia Ports Authority crane lowering a container missed the hole.
