A handful of drinking fountains and classroom sinks in Des Moines public schools had lead levels considered unsafe by the Environmental Protection Agency, according to recent water tests run by the district. The district tested water samples from most of its schools — the last few will be completed next week — and found 12 school buildings with water samples above 15 parts per billion, a limit that the EPA requires to be addressed. Lead levels were as high as 112 ppb in a classroom sink at Howe Elementary, 80 ppb in a classroom sink at Mitchell Elementary, and 77 from a hallway drinking fountain at Woodlawn Elementary, according to a report from Keystone Laboratories. Des Moines leaders said there's no cause for concern and officials are remedying problems.
