Excessive-force suit against Omaha police could be settled for $90,000The rough arrests of three brothers in north Omaha in 2013 could lead to a city payout of $90,000 if the City Council approves a settlement reached in a subsequent lawsuit. The arrests of Demetrius, Octavious and Juaquez Johnson on March 21, 2013, recorded on video by a neighbor from across the street, led Police Chief Todd Schmaderer to fire six officers. Five members of the Johnson family filed a federal lawsuit in early 2014 that alleged excessive force and search and seizure of their property without a warrant. A jury trial had been scheduled for May until a proposed settlement was reached April 18. The agreement, which the City Council will consider at its meeting on Tuesday, would award $30,000 to the family and $60,000 in attorney fees and expenses. The city determined “it’s best to settle for really a nominal amount rather than go to trial,” City Attorney Paul Kratz said.
