The Minnesota House of Representatives passed HF3931 this week, which includes rural broadband expansion measures. The bill is now being considered in the Senate. As of February 2015, an estimated 244,000 households, the majority of which are located in Greater Minnesota, don’t have access to broadband. Rep. Ron Kresha (R-Little Falls) introduced the expansion measures to the House Wednesday. In the omnibus job growth bill, $15 million would be appropriated in fiscal year 2017 and $25 million in fiscal year 2018 to provide high-speed Internet across Greater Minnesota by expanding availability, testing accuracy and deploying development. Of the funds appropriated, $1 million would go to expand grants to unserved areas and $500,000 would be used to expand availability in low-income households. “This is a great step forward and a historic moment for broadband in Greater Minnesota,” Kresh said.
