Judge reveals FBI's first question for Hastert: Is your family safe?
When FBI agents knocked on the door of Dennis Hastert's Plano home a year and a half ago, all they knew was that the once-powerful politician was doing something very strange with his money.
They had no idea then of his dark secret from his days as a wrestling coach, of sex abuse or hush money. The first question out of their mouths showed only concern for the welfare of the former U.S. House speaker.
"Are you and your family safe?" they asked.
The details of that December 2014 confrontation were revealed when a federal judge sentenced Hastert to 15 months in prison Wednesday for making huge cash withdrawals from banks to cover up his sex abuse of a student from his days as Yorkville High School's wrestling coach.
The judge also shed new light on the frenetic investigation launched by federal authorities after Hastert falsely accused the former student of extorting him for $3.5 million by threatening to go public with false claims of sexual misconduct.
