Rauner gets behind Illinois redistricting reform push for fall ballotRepublican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Friday endorsed a petition-driven effort to allow voters to change the state constitution to reduce political influence in the redrawing of legislative boundaries, dismissing attempts by lawmakers to put their own redistricting proposals on the fall ballot. "What we don't want to do is confuse voters, and it would not be productive to have several constitutional amendments on redistricting on the ballot at the same time," Rauner said. "My own opinion is that the fair map coalition that's doing it through a voter referendum has the best proposal. … I certainly believe that that would be a wonderful outcome to have them get their proposal on the ballot," he said. Redistricting reform is part of Rauner's "turnaround agenda," which he has made a precondition for negotiating a state budget with the legislature, along with pro-business, union-weakening changes that the General Assembly's Democratic majorities oppose.
