Nixon vetoes Missouri legislation to cap school funding goal; Senate votes to overrideJEFFERSON CITY — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed a measure Wednesday morning that would cap the targets state government uses to fund public K-12 schools, chiding legislators for approving a "broken promise" to students he said will pave the way for them to enact more tax breaks. The Republican-controlled Senate wasted no time overriding Nixon's veto on a 25 to 7 vote Wednesday afternoon. The lawmaker who filed the bill, Sen. Jay Wasson, R-Nixa, has said the measure is intended to save the state's education funding formula. “I’m not trying to shortchange the schools. What I’m trying to do is keep the formula from growing so fast we can’t catch up,” Wasson has told the News-Leader.
