Missouri House passes bill endorsing over-the-counter birth control pillsJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Last month, a young woman in her late teens had unprotected sex and came to the Joplin Family Planning Clinic to assess her options. Even though she took the Plan B pill the clinic offered, she found out she was pregnant a few days later and returned to the clinic, Donna White, the clinic’s nurse practitioner, said. White said the young woman told her she would have been on birth control had it been more accessible and less expensive. Half of all births in the United States are unintended, and the young woman’s baby will be another, White said. In order to address unintended pregnancies, the Missouri House passed, in a bipartisan fashion, a bill that would, if it becomes law, allow adults to access birth control pills without a prescription at a pharmacy.
