Mike Pence’s political position, post primary, is better than many of us expected. Bruised in his first term, the governor may yet survive to fight another four years. Indiana’s job creation numbers remain strong, and economic development announcements make news almost as frequently as Donald Trump’s outbursts. Exit polls Tuesday confirmed that the economy is the top issue on the minds of both Democratic and Republican voters. And Pence has a solid message to promote about Indiana’s economic rebound along with his administration’s efforts to help Hoosiers adapt to changing workforce needs. Adding to the Pence camp’s confidence is recent polling that shows the governor not only leading by 4 percentage points but also close to the 50 percent mark, a crucial threshold for incumbents in the buildup to Election Day. Perhaps the biggest point in Pence’s favor is what failed to happen. No disgruntled Republican emerged to challenge him in the primary. No A-list Democrat — Evan Bayh, Pete Buttigieg, Joe Donnelly, Karen Freeman-Wilson, Bart Peterson — stepped forward to finish off a wounded incumbent.
