MUNCIE — A man was shot and a city police officer was injured Friday when the drug suspect fled from authorities in a van, in the process dragging the officer down a northeastside street. Muncie Police Chief Steve Stewart said the van — containing three suspects in a drug investigation — was pulled over by uniform officers, accompanied by narcotics investigators, along Elgin Street near the entrance to Elgin Manor Apartments about 2:50 p.m. The actions of one of the van’s occupants prompted an officer to try to open the vehicle’s side door, Stewart said, and the driver sped away, fleeing southbound on Elgin, and dragging the officer an estimated 280 feet. While being dragged, the officer fired gunshots — “I don’t know how many,” Stewart said — that wounded the driver, state police said late Friday.
