PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Senate has passed a bill that would ban the sale of shark fins in the state.
Sen. Susan Sosnowski, a North Kingstown Democrat, sponsored the bill. She says it would make it a crime to own or sell a shark fin unless it's used for scientific research or in preparing a shark for ordinary consumption.
The Senate voted 35-0 to pass the bill on Wednesday. It now moves to the House where a companion bill has been introduced.
Hawaii in 2010 became the first of 10 states to ban the sale and distribution of shark fins.
Shark fin soup is popular in Chinese cuisine but animal rights activists have criticized the practice of slicing off a shark's fin and leaving the fish to die.
