Regionalizing emergency dispatching among several or many area communities has been talked about for years, but a General Assembly bill this year might just make it happen, suggests Anthony Silva, chief of staff to Lt. Gov. Daniel McKee. With an eye on cost savings and more efficient service, Silva is working with mayors and administrators of northern Rhode Island communities in a push for General Assembly approval to construct and operate a new Regional Emergency Communication District, or RECD, that would coordinate police, fire, and rescue emergency services beyond city and town lines. Sen. Louis DiPalma, of the East Bay area, is the sponsor of this Senate Bill 2807, with co-sponsors Stephen Archambault, Smithfield/North Providence; Donna Nesselbush, Pawtucket /North Providence; Frank Lombardo, Johnston; and V. Susan Sosnowski, New Shoreham. There is no House companion bill to date, Silva said. A press conference that outlines the details is planned for Monday, May 9, at the Statehouse.
