Cuts inevitable under Malloy budget proposal: court administratorHARTFORD — The Judicial Department says it will be forced to layoff at least 600 employees in addition to the 126 it let go last month if Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s most recent budget proposal is adopted. With about 3,700 staff members, the department would see a decrease of about a fifth of its employees. “This reduction is both unprecedented and catastrophic in its consequences,” Chief Court Administrator Patrick Carroll said Monday in a letter to Malloy and legislative leaders. “Every function which we perform, including those that meet both statutory and constitutional responsibilities, will be compromised.” Malloy on Monday proposed a $19.7 billion budget package in an effort to close a projected $960 million deficit next fiscal year. The proposal would cut roughly $78.8 million from the judicial budget, including $57 million from its funding for employees’ salaries.
