PORTSMOUTH – Police detective Kristyn Bernier filed a demand letter with the city seeking $975,000 for alleged discrimination, retaliatory practices, defamation, breach of good faith, harassment and negligent and intentional infliction of emotional duress. Bernier also alleges negligent training and supervision of past members of the Police Department and through attorney Kirsten Wilson asks for mediation within three weeks of the April 29 demand, or "we will be filing suit." Wilson and Bernier said they had no comment for this article. City Attorney Robert Sullivan made the letter public Thursday afternoon and said he had no comment. Bernier's demand comes on the heels of a $21 million demand from five other people who allege police misconduct by former members of the Police Department. A 22-year Portsmouth police officer, Bernier claims she had more experience in managing drug cases than any supervisor in 2009 when she was transferred out of the drug unit and "replaced by two male officers, neither of whom had drug experience."
