A New Hampshire House committee has revived hopes that the Granite State will join the rest of New England and decriminalize first-time possession of small amounts of marijuana. Making weed possession a violation rather than a crime appeared to be a dead issue last week after the Senate rejected a bill that would have fined those possessing small amounts of pot rather than pursuing criminal prosecutions. The Senate, however, worried that removing criminal penalties for small amounts of marijuana might send a mixed message about drug use at a time the state is experiencing a tragic spike in overdose deaths tied to heroin and other opiates. In last Sunday’s editorial we wrote that we understand the Senate’s concern but think conflating the opiate epidemic with the criminalization of small amounts of marijuana does society more harm than good.
