Sen. Bernie Sanders has a historic opportunity to redefine what “mainstream” politics looks like in America, and that is reason enough for him to stay in the race. The energy generated by Sanders’s presidential bid has the potential to shape the Democratic party and national politics long after the 2016 elections are over. The big question: Is the man from Vermont the one to personally lead the movement? Sanders’s upset victory in Indiana on Tuesday gives the democratic socialist and his supporters reason to push ahead with his improbable campaign. Sanders already has exceeded all expectations, rising in the polls, winning states and forcing presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton to work to earn her nomination. Sanders has made issues of social and economic justice the mainstays of the Democratic race. The leadership is unhappy with Sanders for crashing their party, and understandably so. Afterall, he never identified himself as a Democrat until he decided to seek the party’s nomination.
