St. Johnsbury Accepts State Payoff To Expand Prison PopulationTown leaders have a price when it comes to letting the state increase the local prisoner population; it’s $1 million. Selectmen on Friday afternoon announced they will permit a prison expansion in St. Johnsbury by 56 new inmates, after opposing it in the past. The state in return agreed to invest $1 million into St. Johnsbury, and to boost its annual “readiness to serve payment” to the town from $20,000 to $50,000. “The town has resolved all major issues with the state with respect to the Caledonia Community Work Camp,” said Town Manager Chad Whitehead. A destination for the state’s $1 million allocation is unclear but generally it is “to help meet long term goals for St. Johnsbury’s community, especially in regards to housing,” according to Whitehead. The Vermont Housing Conservation Board, which is allocating the money, and the town of St. Johnsbury will determine the money’s use. www.caledonianrecord.com/news/local/st-johnsbury-accepts-state-payoff-to-expand-prison-population/article_d0e5601f-1dc4-59b1-997d-aed52c7127d5.html
