Aurora theater shooting victims cite security flaws as civil trial opensCENTENNIAL — On the night that a gunman attacked the Century Aurora 16 cineplex, the theater had no armed guards on duty, no security cameras monitoring the backside of the complex, no alarms on its exit doors and no perimeter patrols in place to watch for danger, an attorney for several victims of the attack said Tuesday. "We're going to prove," attorney Marc Bern vowed to jurors during opening statements in the first civil trial against theater owner Cinemark over the 2012 shooting, "that there were a number of things the theater could have done to prevent or deter what happened. And if these things had been done ... we wouldn't be here." But, also on the night of the shooting, the gunman brought with him four firearms, hundreds of bullets, a suit of heavy body armor, and an intent to kill as many people as possible, a lawyer for Cinemark countered during his opening statement. "The evidence will show this man was not turning back," attorney Kevin Taylor said.
