SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers may require state universities to allow students accused of sexual assault to bring lawyers to school disciplinary hearings. Republican bill sponsor Rep. Kim Coleman said Tuesday that if a college finds a student guilty of sexually assaulting a classmate, that determination can follow them for the rest of their academic career. She said at a legislative hearing that both the accused and alleged victim need legal representation. Students would pay for their own attorneys. Democratic Sen. Jim Dabakis says he worries that that will be unfair to the students who can't afford a lawyer. Students are allowed to hire lawyers now, but they can't participate in disciplinary hearings like in a courtroom.
