Cleveland Council to introduce legislation setting $15/hr minimum wageCLEVELAND, Ohio – Compelled by a petition drive that caught fire last month, Cleveland City Council on Monday will introduce legislation boosting the minimum wage in the city to $15 an hour. According to a news release Wednesday, Council Clerk Pat Britt has notified Raise Up Cleveland, a group that petitioned for the wage hike, that it collected enough signatures to compel the council to take up the issue. The group, which needed 5,000 voter signatures, delivered more than 28,000 in support of the measure to council on May 2. Britt forwarded the petitions to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections for verification that those who signed are registered voters in the city. The Board certified that 11,900 signatures were valid. The Service Employees International Union, which supports Raise Up Cleveland, also submitted to council an "itemized statement of the circulators," detailing the cost of the petition drive, according to the news release. The union paid 149 circulators more than $51,000 and spent thousands more on a specialized phone system, transportation, a staff attorney and other union staff involved in the drive, the release stated.
