Ohio bills seek to tighten lead contamination notification rules, ban local hiring quotasCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio House on Wednesday unanimously approved a bill strengthening state rules about lead contamination in water. Currently, homeowners must be notified within 30 days of unsafe lead levels in their water. House Bill 512 would cut the notification period to two business days and allow the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to step in if water systems don't properly notify residents. The bill also allows local governments to apply for grants for water system improvements such as new water lines and school drinking fountains. Gov. John Kasich proposed the changes earlier this year after the village of Sebring and Ohio EPA failed to promptly notify residents of high lead levels in the water.
