Planned Parenthood awaits decision on privileges, Supreme Court ruling to provide Columbia abortionsPlanned Parenthood is awaiting the outcome of an appeal filed by Colleen McNicholas that will determine whether she obtains hospital privileges from the University of Missouri and again can offer abortions in Columbia. McNicholas, a St. Louis obstetrician and gynecologist, provided medication-induced abortions at the Columbia clinic from Aug. 1 until Nov. 23, when MU Health Care stopped granting refer and follow privileges that had allowed the clinic to obtain a state license. The Executive Committee of the Medical Staff on Feb. 22 turned down McNicholas’ request for new privileges, MU Health spokeswoman Mary Jenkins said Thursday. McNicholas has appealed the decision, Jenkins said, and the review process could take months. A successful appeal is one of three ways abortions could resume at the Providence Road clinic, Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri President Laura McQuade said Thursday. McQuade spoke to reporters the day after U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughrey issued a permanent injunction barring the state from revoking the license before it expires June 30.
