Bayhealth Medical Center and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware have reached an agreement that will ensure Highmark Delaware's members will have access to in-network services provided by the hospital and its outpatient facilities and physicians. Bayhealth and Highmark had been at odds over rates to reimburse the hospital for its care of patients. The current contract, which was set to end Sunday, will not expire, Bayhealth officials said. Neither party would discuss terms of the contract. If they had not come to an agreement, about 18,000 Highmark customers, including state employees who utilize Bayhealth medical services in Kent and upper Sussex counties would have had to pay more expensive out-of-network rates for certain treatments or switch doctors completely. This agreement "in principle is binding," according to a release sent out by Highmark and Bayhealth late Friday. Formal agreements will be completed by May 20.
