State says Virginians are becoming more "multimodal" as teleworking trend continuesThough Virginia’s population has grown by nearly 8 percent since 2007, the number of single-occupancy vehicle commutes has fallen by 6 percent, according to a study commissioned by the state Department of Rail and Public Transportation. That’s evidence that Virginians are more “multimodal” now, using alternate means to get to work, including mass transit. The study, performed by the Richmond-based Southeastern Institute of Research, also found that the number of workers teleworking has nearly doubled since 2007 and that the use of trains and buses has increased 33 percent. The study surveyed 10,000 state residents in 12 regions via phone and internet. “The results of the 2015 Travel Survey demonstrate the strides we’ve made towards increasing awareness of the many transportation and telework options in the commonwealth,” Virginia Transportation Secretary Aubrey L.
