The deadline to apply to open one of Alabama’s first public charter schools is less than two months away, but no one has applied yet. Ed Richardson, chairman of the Alabama Public Charter School Commission, said this week by phone that the commission has received no applications. Aug. 1 is the deadline to apply. Richardson said he expected few applicants because it’s the first year of the application process. Charter schools are privately run schools that receive government funding, but that act independently from the public school districts where they are established. Alabama is one of seven states without charter schools; the Legislature in 2015 passed a law allowing the establishment of charters. State education leaders have been working since then to set the guidelines by which private groups can open and operate the schools.
