Miss. House lawmakers continue fight over catfish inspectionsWASHINGTON -- Mississippi's House delegation plans to take up the fight to keep catfish inspections under the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Senate dealt a blow to Mississippi’s Republican senators last month when it voted for a resolution by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to return the inspections to the Food and Drug Administration. Opponents of the resolution say the USDA does a better job than the FDA of protecting consumers against contaminated catfish from foreign countries, particularly Vietnam. The USDA inspections began earlier this year. House lawmakers from Mississippi and a diverse group of other states, including Connecticut, teamed up last week on a bipartisan letter to House leaders urging them not to hold a vote on the Senate resolution. . “I fully expect that after recess there will be a more concerted effort to see that foreign fish are inspected (by) the same standard as U.S. farm-raised catfish,’’ said Cory Horton, legislative director for 2nd District Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat. Read more: www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2016/06/03/miss-house-lawmakers-continue-fight-over-cafish-inspections/85352178/
