Newly filed legislation in Nashville's Metro Council could set the path toward paid maternity and paternity leave for Metro government employees. A resolution sponsored by Councilman Anthony Davis of East Nashville and Councilwoman Sheri Weiner of Bellevue would request the Metro Employment Benefit Board study and implement a parental and sick leave policy that gives paid maternity and paternity leave for city workers. Metro does not have a policy that allows city employees to continue to receive pay after parenting a newborn. Davis said he learned about that void after a Nashville teacher who recently gave birth brought it to his attention. Meanwhile, he said many of Nashville’s peer cities have such a policy.
