Federal judge extends block on Ohio law defunding Planned ParenthoodCINCINNATI, Ohio – A federal judge on Wednesday extended his order that the state not defund Planned Parenthood until at least August, lengthening his block on a new state law by two months. In the meantime, U.S. District Judge Michael R. Barrett will hear arguments in his Cincinnati courtroom over whether the temporary restraining order that keeps the defunding law from taking effect should be made permanent. The dispute Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio sued in federal court May 11, arguing the state efforts to defund the organization punished the organization for advocating and participating in a constitutionally protected right. The new law forbids Ohio from contracting for health services with any entity that performs or promotes non-therapeutic abortions. The organization could still perform abortions, but it would lose state health contracts. Read more: www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2016/06/federal_judge_extends_block_on.html
