Will Indianapolis residents tax themselves to pay for more government service? In particular, will they tax themselves for expanded bus service? If recent mass transportation and school funding voter referendums are any indication, the answer is likely “yes.” Voters in Indiana and across the country in recent years have approved tax hikes for those two services much more than they have rejected them, often by overwhelming margins. Residents of Marion County will have their chance to decide in the Nov. 8 general election whether to increase their personal income tax rate by 0.25 percentage point to raise $56 million a year for IndyGo, the city’s bus system.
