Local governments get $500 million as part of state road funding dealMore than $500 million has been distributed to local governments across the state as part of a local road funding measure the General Assembly and Gov. Mike Pence approved earlier this year. The bulk of that money — about $435 million — will go to counties, cities and towns. They must use 75 percent for road and bridge work. The rest will go to other jurisdictions, such as school and library districts. “Early this year, we committed to investing significant new funding in state and local infrastructure maintenance to preserve the Crossroads of America,” Pence said in a statement Wednesday. “Today, we make good on that promise with the distribution of funds to local governments to further improve infrastructure and spur economic development and quality of life in communities across Indiana.” The money came from local option income taxes that were held in trust by the state. Lawmakers decided to release the money back to local governments as part of an $800 million, two-year bridge and highway funding plan.
