Mumps have been spreading around Indiana college campuses in recent months, but Purdue University health officials are hopeful the flare-up will simmer down with the summer break. Purdue announced Thursday it's investigating five probable new cases of the virus. One new case had been confirmed as of Friday morning, said Gail Walenga, director of the Purdue University Student Health Center. Since campus experienced its first outbreak in April, Walenga said one or two students a week on average have tested positive for mumps at PUSH. "We've kind of been riding this little wave," she said. But Walenga expects mumps cases to decline now that a good portion of students will be off campus during the summer months.
