Woodstock's Old Courthouse, Sheriff's House may get historical marker -- connection with labor leader Eugene V. Debs, Chester Gould and Orson WellesWOODSTOCK – The Old Courthouse and Sheriff’s House in Woodstock could be the site of an Illinois historic marker that would acknowledge the significance of the property and its association with labor leader Eugene V. Debs. Deb’s role in the Pullman Strike and the resulting court case led to his six-month incarceration in the Sheriff’s House in 1895. Kathleen Spaltro, board member of the nonprofit Woodstock Celebrates, has led the effort to apply for the plaque from the Illinois State Historical Society. The Woodstock City Council approved of spending $1,700 to purchase the marker, if the application is accepted. -snip- The sign would be 29 by 40.5 inches and have space for 100 words, according to city documents. “It is remarkable that Woodstock is associated with three world-class figures: Chester Gould, Orson Welles and Eugene V. Debs,” Spaltro said in an email. “The association with Debs needs to be much better known.” Read more: www.nwherald.com/2016/06/03/woodstocks-old-courthouse-sheriffs-house-may-get-historical-marker/amyjrn4/
